PRIDE MONTH 2026: SUPPORTING DIVERSITY, INCLUSION & BELONGING
Pride Month is celebrated every June to honour the LGBTQ+ community, recognising its history, achievements and ongoing journey towards equality, acceptance and inclusion. It is a time to celebrate diversity, amplify LGBTQ+ voices and acknowledge the contributions that individuals from the community have made across all aspects of society.
The origins of Pride Month can be traced back to the Stonewall Uprising of June 1969 in New York City. Following a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, members of the LGBTQ+ community stood up against discrimination and injustice, sparking a movement that would become a defining moment in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. Today, Pride Month serves as both a celebration of progress and a reminder of the importance of continuing to advocate for equality and human rights.
Throughout the month, communities around the world come together to participate in a wide range of events, including educational workshops, cultural exhibitions, panel discussions, performances and community gatherings. These events provide opportunities to celebrate LGBTQ+ identities, raise awareness of key issues and foster greater understanding and inclusion.
One of the most anticipated events of Pride Month is the Pride in London Parade. Taking place in the heart of the capital, the parade brings together thousands of participants, community groups, charities, businesses and allies in a vibrant display of solidarity and celebration. The event showcases the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community and serves as a powerful reminder of the progress that has been achieved through collective action and advocacy. Similar Pride parades and celebrations take place across the UK and around the world, creating spaces where people can come together to celebrate identity, visibility and belonging.
Pride Month is also an opportunity to recognise the importance of allyship. Supporting LGBTQ+ communities means listening to lived experiences, promoting inclusion and helping to create environments where everyone feels respected, valued and empowered to be themselves. By encouraging open dialogue and understanding, Pride helps to build stronger, more inclusive communities for future generations.
While Pride is a celebration, it is also a time for reflection. It provides an opportunity to acknowledge the challenges that many LGBTQ+ individuals continue to face and to recognise the ongoing efforts of activists, organisations and communities working to advance equality and representation around the world.
Pride Month reminds us of the importance of dignity, respect and belonging. It encourages us to celebrate diversity in all its forms and to continue striving towards a society where everyone can live authentically and without fear of discrimination.
Wishing everyone a happy, safe and meaningful Pride Month.
