AR RAHMAN AT ROYAL ALBERT HALL FOR LANDMARK ORCHESTRAL COLLABORATION
The Royal Albert Hall hosted a historic three-night orchestral event this past weekend as AR Rahman x Rushil Ranjan premiered a groundbreaking cross-cultural collaboration, bringing together Eastern and Western classical traditions on one of the world’s most prestigious stages.
Held across 24th–26th April 2026, the sold-out performances marked AR Rahman’s highly anticipated debut at the venue, alongside composer and Royal Albert Hall Associate Artist Rushil Ranjan. The collaboration presented a powerful fusion of orchestral innovation, cinematic legacy, and contemporary global composition.
At the centre of the programme was the world premiere of 'Rangreza', a newly commissioned orchestral work co-composed by Rahman and Ranjan. Inspired by Sufi philosophy, the piece explored themes of unity, spirituality, and shared human experience through music.
The composition was performed by a combined ensemble featuring the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London Voices and the Sunshine Orchestra of Chennai, creating a rare cross-continental orchestral collaboration on the Royal Albert Hall stage.
Conducted by Melvin Tay, the performances brought together musicians from diverse musical traditions, blending Western symphonic structure with Indian classical sensibilities. Featured soloists Abi Sampa, Sarthak Kalyani and Janan Sathiendran contributed additional vocal depth across the programme.
In addition to the world premiere, the programme included newly orchestrated arrangements of AR Rahman’s most iconic compositions from films such as Roja, Guru, Rockstar, Jodhaa Akbar and 127 Hours. These reinterpretations transformed the original works into large-scale symphonic pieces, offering audiences a renewed listening experience.
The collaboration between AR Rahman and Rushil Ranjan was conceived as an artistic dialogue between musical traditions, highlighting the shared language of composition beyond geographical and cultural boundaries.
Speaking through the music presented across the weekend, the project emphasised unity, collaboration and innovation as central themes, reflecting both composers’ commitment to expanding the global orchestral repertoire.
