SOUTH ASIAN HERITAGE MONTH 2026: CELEBRATING UNITY IN DIVERSITY

South Asian Heritage Month is celebrated across the UK every July, recognising the rich histories, cultures and contributions of South Asian communities to British society. It is a time to celebrate diversity, commemorate shared histories and educate future generations, while shining a spotlight on the individuals, traditions and stories that continue to shape the UK’s cultural landscape.

First established in 2020, South Asian Heritage Month was created to ensure that the intertwined histories of the UK and South Asia are understood, celebrated and commemorated. What began as a UK observance has since grown into a global movement, bringing together communities, organisations and institutions to explore the heritage and cultures that continue to connect Britain with South Asia.

From 2026, South Asian Heritage Month takes place from 1st –31st July, making it easier for schools, workplaces and community organisations to plan events and encouraging even greater participation across the UK and beyond. This year’s theme, “Unity in Diversity,” celebrates the extraordinary richness of South Asian communities, recognising the many languages, cultures, faiths and traditions that make up the region while highlighting the shared values and experiences that bring people together.

Throughout the month, communities across the UK take part in a wide range of events, including cultural festivals, exhibitions, educational workshops, panel discussions, storytelling sessions and community celebrations. These events provide opportunities to learn more about South Asian heritage, celebrate cultural traditions and encourage meaningful conversations about identity, belonging and inclusion.

South Asian Heritage Month also recognises the lasting contributions of British South Asians across every aspect of society. From healthcare, education and public service to business, science, sport, the arts and entertainment, generations of South Asian communities have played an important role in shaping modern Britain. Their achievements continue to inspire future generations while enriching communities across the country.

While the month is a celebration of culture and identity, it is also a time for reflection. It encourages greater understanding of the histories that connect Britain and South Asia, provides space for South Asian communities to share their own stories and experiences, and helps build stronger, more inclusive communities through education and dialogue.

South Asian Heritage Month reminds us of the importance of recognising the diverse cultures, histories and experiences that form part of Britain’s shared story. By celebrating heritage, embracing different perspectives and learning from one another, we can continue to foster a society where everyone feels represented, respected and a true sense of belonging.
