“DEATH NOTE”: THE MUSICAL MAKES ITS BARBICAN DEBUT

“Death Note: The Musical” arrives at the Barbican Theatre in London for its world premiere season, bringing the globally acclaimed manga to life on stage in a bold new English-language production.

Based on the internationally best selling manga by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, Death Note tells the story of Light Yagami, a brilliant student who discovers a mysterious notebook with the power to kill anyone whose name is written within it. As he sets out to reshape the world in pursuit of his own vision of justice, he is drawn into a high-stakes psychological battle with the enigmatic detective L, where every decision carries life-or-death consequences.

First published in Japan in 2003, Death Note has become a global cultural phenomenon, spanning anime, film, television and stage adaptations. The musical version features a score by Tony, Grammy and Emmy nominee Frank Wildhorn, lyrics by Jack Murphy, and a book by Ivan Menchell, reimagined for London audiences in collaboration with original producers HoriPro and a leading international creative team.

Following successful productions in Asia and concert stagings in London, this new Barbican production marks the first fully staged English-language world premiere. The creative team brings together acclaimed talent across direction, design, choreography and orchestration, delivering a visually striking and emotionally charged theatrical experience.

At its core, “Death Note: The Musical” explores themes of justice, morality, power and consequence, asking what happens when one person decides to take control of life and death itself. It is a gripping psychological thriller that blends contemporary musical theatre with the intensity and imagination of the original story.

Running for a strictly limited season, the production offers audiences the opportunity to experience a cult classic reimagined for the stage in one of London’s most iconic cultural venues. Get your tickets here.
