“THELMA & LOUISE”: THE ICONIC ROAD MOVIE ARRIVES AT THE YOUNG VIC AS A NEW MUSICAL
More than three decades after becoming one of cinema’s most iconic stories of friendship, freedom and rebellion, Thelma & Louise arrives at London’s Young Vic as a brand-new musical, bringing Callie Khouri’s celebrated road movie to the stage in an ambitious new production.
Opening at the Young Vic from 3rd September to 24th October 2026, the world premiere musical stars Amy Lennox as Thelma and Rachel Tucker as Louise, with music and lyrics by Grammy-nominated artist Neko Case and direction by Trip Cullman. The production is a co-production between the Young Vic, Sonia Friedman Productions, Blue Spruce Productions, Ley Line Entertainment and Callie Khouri, with Mandy Greenfield in association with MGM ON STAGE.
The story follows best friends Thelma and Louise as they escape for a spontaneous weekend away. What begins as a much-needed break quickly takes an unexpected turn following an ill-fated encounter at a roadside bar, sending the pair on a last-chance adventure that tests their friendship and forces them to confront a world where the odds are stacked against them.
Originally released as the Oscar and Golden Globe-winning film in 1991, Thelma & Louise has endured as a landmark story of female friendship, independence and resistance. This new stage adaptation revisits the iconic story for a contemporary audience, with Callie Khouri returning to her own work alongside an entirely new musical score.
Neko Case’s original music and lyrics provide the production with a soaring contemporary score, while director Trip Cullman brings together an acclaimed creative team including choreographers Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber, scenographers Christine Jones and Brett J. Banakis, costume designer Ryan Dawson Laight, lighting designer Natasha Chivers and sound designer Gareth Owen.
Leading the cast are Amy Lennox, known for Cabaret and Kinky Boots, as Thelma, and Rachel Tucker, whose West End credits include Wicked, Come From Away, Hadestown and Sunset Boulevard, as Louise. The production also features Trevor Dion Nicholas, Jordan Luke Gage, Letitia Hector and a wider ensemble of established musical theatre performers.
With its themes of friendship, freedom, survival and female empowerment, Thelma & Louise arrives at the Young Vic at a time when the feminist politics and enduring relevance of the original story continue to resonate. The result promises to be a bold, electrifying and emotionally charged new chapter for one of cinema’s most recognisable stories.
